Taal Express
The train journey within the Indian subcontinent traverses the most extensive rail network in the world and connotes the pulse of India and the many lives it sustains. The heartbeat of the nation is symbolized by this nostalgic, rustic vehicle that is perhaps the best way to discover the many lands and myriad cultures of India.
Discover the soul of India aboard the Taal Express, a mesmerising musical train ride that brings you across its rich landscapes—from the southern region of Tamil Nadu to Punjab in the north—to uncover the beauty and charm of Indian music traditions.
Hear the invocatory beats of a nadaswaram (percussion instrument) during a mallari temple procession; the vibrant rhythms of a khol (percussion instrument) in a Manipuri drum dance, folk pieces performed on the shehnai (double reed wind instrument); classic Kannada numbers; vibrant Rajasthani dance; as well as other forms of music of other regions. Ride into the heartlands of India and let your senses come alive to the invigorating rhythms and tunes that unravel along the way.
First staged at the 2006 Singapore Arts Festival, the Taal Express sets off on yet another epic musical journey across India in celebration of its vibrant arts and cultures. Presented by the Temple of Fine Arts, this production features a 30-member orchestra comprising local and overseas musicians, and instruments such as the shehnai, the sarod and the sarangi (string instrument).
