Damaru - Pulse of the Universe

A contemporary showcase of the confluence of world rhythms and music inspired by the ancient damaru, an hourglass shaped drum found in Incan, Tibetan and Indian civilisations, and revered in their cosmology.

The clang and boom of the damaru was believed to be the primordial sound that initiated the creation of the universe; inherent in its limitless potential, the very source of human speech and music.

To the ancient Incans, their similarly shaped monkey drum is also the instrument of creation. The damaru figures prominently in modern discussions on the relation between western physics and eastern mysticism, especially in regard to the concept of Lord Shiva's dance of creation, holding it in his right hand.

It is believed that the sound emanating from the damaru is the pulse that sets in motion the eternal cycle of creation, preservation and dissolution.

The showcase will evoke the essence of the damaru, from both the mythological and musical perspectives, with the grandeur of an orchestra, using a delightful ensemble of Asian and Western instruments including the soulful cello and enchanting sarod as well as drums from Africa, the Middle East, China and Japan.
